Sin is a concept that has various meanings to people. The unsaved world views sin lightly while Christians should view sin as damaging to the soul, a hinderance to our walk with Christ, and if we do not watch what we partake in, it can destroy our lives. However, some Christians try to find ways of how to still follow Jesus but do the things that the Lord calls sin.
When the world is doing something that we know is wrong, we must leave it as that, but some people think of ways to do that thing, but not get burned with fire. Some may call it “playing with fire” while others say that this behavior is lukewarm behavior, which it is, but no matter what you call it, this action is wrong. When the world says “Yes,” but God says “No,” we must listen and not try to skirt around the issue!
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15-17
If we claim to love the Lord, we must set apart from the world. Those who love the world, the sins of the world, the lusts of the world, and the pride of the world, do not have the Father, for the Father does not dwell in those things. Although, one day the world and the lusts of the world will pass away, those who do the will of God will abide forever!
If we know what the world’s fate is, then why are we wanting to be apart of it? If you knew that a horrible storm was going to hit a certain area, you would stay home or avoid that area at all costs, so why is it different with the sins of the world? When we see a sin that could damage us, we should go the other way or find refuge in Christ, for He will make sure no sin will destroy us.
“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” James 4:4
When we want to be friends with the world, we are making God our enemy. The world opposes God, what He stands for, and the deny His grace, so wanting to be apart of the world is denying Christ.
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36
What do you gain in profit if you lose your own soul to the world? The pleasures of this world will one day end, and then you have eternity. Is giving up your soul for the world worth your eternal destination? Is rebelling against God really worth it? The answer is “No,” but some people block out that answer for they do not want to hear the truth.
In the end, we must stand strong in Christ and deny the world. This world is going to pass away one day, so why worry about what people think of you? Though we may be persecuted now for our faith, we will dwell with Jesus and His Father in heaven, which is the greatest reward anyone could ever receive, so though the world may be accepting of everything, we must stand strong on the Word of God, and say “No” when we need too.
