Pride is something that can make a person hit rock bottom. When someone gains a reputation, a promotion, or anything that gives personal validation, this could cause pride to arise if one is not thankful for the blessing that God has given them. Pride is considered to be one of the deadliest sins, and we are all guilty of being prideful. We have all had time where we were full of pride, but then there are some who are always filled with pride, and have no humility. When we become overly prideful and lose sense of humility, we will soon begin to think that we do not need God, and that is simply not true, and that ideology will cause a person to hit rock bottom.
“When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom.” Provbers 11:2
When one becomes prideful, then shame will come, but when one chooses to be humble, then wisdom comes. As we progress in our successes in life, we must remain humble so we can become wise. A person who is prideful is known to be ignorant, arrogant, and never takes direction from anyone. A person who is prideful thinks they’re right all the time, and that everyone else around them is wrong. Pride blinds us from taking responsibility when we know we are wrong, and when the ability to be humble is gone, it is only a matter of time when God teaches us how to be humble.
“Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18
Before there is destruction, there is pride. Those with a haughty spirit act as if nothing can destroy them, but their very spirit is what is going to cause them to fall. Though no human may come after them, God will not let them go unpunished. (See Proverbs 16:5 for more). When God sees that we are becoming prideful, He will make us humble by placing us in a situation, bringing someone to us, or by some other way. God will teach us the importance of humility, even if it means us hitting rock bottom for the truth to be seen.
“The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God;
God is in none of his thoughts.” Psalm 10:4
A person with pride does not seek God for they are too indulged into their pride that God is nowhere in their minds. A prideful person belittles others and thinks about personal gain instead of others gain. One cannot say they think of God, yet are very prideful. To follow Christ, you must be willing to give up everything for Christ, (Luke 14:33) and a person who is full of pride could not do that. A person full of pride would only think of the negatives instead of thinking about Jesus!
When someone is exceedingly prideful, the path leads to destruction. However, with a loving God, we can turn to Him if we have any issues, even if we battle with pride. We must continuously pray to be humble and to not let our achievements, reputation, or anything go to our heads. Instead of becoming prideful, we must give God the glory for all things, for everything good comes from Him! Therefore, the next time a blessing comes your way, let your first motive be to thank the Lord, and always be gracious and humble for His grace and blessings in your life.
