Loudness, chaos, and many other things fill our society, but as believers, we should have a different way of living. As believers, we should have a soft answer and a gentle spirit. This task can be hard at times, but with God, you cannot take a day off because you aren’t able to preform the task. The Lord expects us to live for Him in every aspect no matter how we are feeling, no matter what the situation is, and no matter what the day is. Following Christ takes sacrifice and selflessness.
“A soft answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.”Proverbs 15:1
When someone comes up to you and begins to pound you over your conduct, what you might of done, or your faith, you must speak with a soft answer, for a soft answer turns away wrath! The person who is very angry will not be the one to speak with kindness, so you must be the one to season your speech and speak softly. (See Colossians 4:6).
Patience is key when it comes to giving a soft answer instead of a rebuttal against the angry person. I was reading a devotional last night, and it really opened my eyes. Many Christians pray for patience, but when God puts them in a situation that requires patience, they blow it! Patience is a test, so when you ask for it, they only way to obtain it is by God placing you in a test!
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” James 1:2-3
God could just give us patience, but He wants us to learn patience. Jesus tests our faith for a reason, not because He thinks we would fail, but because He knows it’ll strengthen us, so the same is with patience. When God puts us in those times where patience is strongly needed, just know that this is a test, and that the way you respond lets God know if you need more conviction with patience.
When you have obtained patience, giving soft answers become a second nature. You will be wise and understand that anger turns into a full blown argument, but kindness tones down those who are angry. To have a soft answer, is not always an easy task, but that’s why we ask God for help.
“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4
Ladies, beauty isn’t what is found on the outside, but true beauty is having a gentle and quiet spirit. Our society has been wrong on beauty for the longest time, but God says true beauty isn’t what is seen on the outside, but for what is on the inside.
Our spirit should be gentle, quiet, and not loud or harsh. For us to have a soft answer, we must have a gentle and quiet spirit. Many women can agree that it is not always easy having a gentle and quiet spirit, but when we ask Jesus for conviction and help, help will come.
As believers, we should all have a soft answer to all troubling situations. Life may bring curve balls, but that doesn’t give us the excuse to respond in the way that we think is right. God’s Word will not change to fit your circumstance, so you must change your circumstance to match God’s Word, and that doesn’t come with any exceptions.
